Range

N. Atlantic Ocean, North Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Gulf of Mexico;
In the w. North Atlantic breeds from 46°N to 50°N on is. off e. Canada (e. Quebec off the Gaspe Peninsula at Perce on Bonaventure Is., Anticosti Is., Magdalen Is. and Newfoundland). Formerly bred off se. New Brunswick and s. Nova Scotia. In the e. North Atlantic breeds from 48°N to 76°N in Iceland, Faroes, n. Norway, British Isles in England, Scotland (Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth) and Ireland and Channel Is., n. France (Brittany).
Winters along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States, rarely to Mexico (Veracruz) and off nw. Russia, Baltic Sea, Denmark and sw. Sweden, Portugal and Spain, e. in the Mediterranean to Italy and Crete, off Africa from w. Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania to n. Guinea and the Cape Verde Is.

Winter: MAS, RID, NYK (Long Island), NJY, DEL, MYD, VIR, NCA, SCA, GEO, FLA, occasionally in the Gulf of Mexico to ALA, MIS, LOU, rarely to TEX (mostly immature birds).
