Range
Australia, Tasmania and s. New Guinea;
Throughout Australia, except the w. desert, and Tasmania, but it has only a few breeding colonies: e. and n. of a line from Adelaide through Alice Spring and Tennant Creek to Broome, then to Esperance. Western Australia (Fremantle and coastal islands near Onslow and Port Hedland), Northern Territory, Queensland (near Karumba at the head of the Gulf of Carpentaria, Rocky Is. and near Brisbane), New South Wales (Lake Brewster, Cawndilla Lake, Lake George and Lake Cowal), Victoria (French Island and Lake Hindmarsh), South Australia (Lake Alexandrina, Lake Eyre, The Coorong, Pelican Is., Lacepede Bay, the Investigator Strait) and in Tasmania (Furneaux Group and off Cape Grim).
Disperses to and may breed in s. New Guinea near Port Moresby, the Trans-Fly, sw. New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, Vanuatu and perhaps the Solomon Is. Recent irruptions have occurred to w. to the Moluccas, Sulawesi, Lesser Sundas, Java and perhaps even e. Sumatra.
