S. Scandinavia, Denmark, e. Germany (Hessen in the Kellerwald) s. and e. through Poland, ec. Russia (Ukraine and s. Ural Mountains), the Balkans (Romania), and s. Russia (Caucasus, Transcaucasus), n. Turkey, n. Iran (s. Caspian Sea region) to the w. Himalayas.
Winters in Pakistan, n. and w. India. Rarely winters in ne. Africa.
