Range

E. Europe to c. Asia;
Fragmented distribution;
Cs. and e. Europe from Netherlands, Denmark, ne. Germany (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Brandenburg), and Poland (Karsiborska Kepa in the Swina River, Biebrza), Lithuania, e. Austria (Neusiedlersee), Hungary (Hortobagy National Park), w. Slovakia (Senne) to the Ukraine (upper Pripyat River) and Belarus (Zvanets, Dikoe, Yaselda River), w. Russia (n. Black Sea area) s. to 56°N, Italy, Sicily, and n. Yugoslavia. An islolated population might exist along the Ob River in Siberia.
Main migration route is along the Baltic Sea coast to the North Sea coast through France to the coast of Spain and Portugal to nw. Africa (Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia).
Winters in subsaharan West Africa (s. Mauritania, Senegal in Djoudj National Park, Mali, and Ghana). Regularly seen along the coast of the Black Sea in Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and in Jordan and Egypt (Siberian birds?).
