Range
W. Europe to ne. Asia;
(1) Europe from British Isles, Shetland Is., n. Scandinavia e. across n. Russia and n. Siberia.
Small colonies sometime breed in Botswana that apparently consist of European birds that do not return n.
(2) Mediterranean Basin, nw. Africa (Morocco, Algeria, and n. Libya) to Turkey, Middle East, n. Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkestan, and e. Kazakhstan. Nw. India in the Himalayas between 3000 and 4000m in n. Kashmir and Ladakh to w. China (w. and n. Sinkiang).
(3) E. Asia in Mongolia, Manchuria in Heilungkiang, w. Anadyrland, Sea of Okhotsk, and Sakhalin Is.
Winters in tropical s. Africa and se. Asia (s. China, Burma and Thailand).
