Range

E. n. Atlantic Ocean, w. Mediterranean Sea to s. Atlantic Ocean and ex. sw. Indian Ocean;
Breeds in the ne. Atlantic Ocean on is. off s. Iceland (Vestmann Is.), Faeroes, c. Norway (Lofoten Is.), n. Scotland, w. England, Wales (Iles of Scilly), n., w. and s. Ireland (County Kerry), the Channel Is. (Little Burhou), w. France (Brittany and Biarritz), Spain, Portugal and off Morocco (Salvage Is.), is. in the Mediterranean off Spain, Algeria, Tunisia, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, s. Italy, the Balearics and Malta and is. in the Adriatic Sea off Yugoslavia and the Aegean Sea to Greece. Formerly bred on Ile de la Galite off Tunisia.
Disperses to Yugoslavia, Italy, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain, Portugal, Canary Is., off w. Africa (Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and the Ivory Coast). Main wintering areas are off Namibia and South Africa e. to the coast of Natal and n. to the mouth of the Zambezi River in the s. Mozambique Channel, ex. sw. Indian Ocean.
