Range
C. and n. Pacific Ocean; Atlantic Ocean; Mostly Between 40°N and 70°N;
Two populations;
(1) Off n. Hokkaido, Japan, Kuril Is., is. off the Kamchatka Peninsula (Commander Is.), Siberia (Shumagin), Aleutians, is. off s. Alaska, w. Canada (British Columbia), w. United States s. to c. California, e. Canada (s. Labrador, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec), e. United States (Casco Bay, Maine and Penikese Is., Massachusetts), s. Greenland, s. Iceland, is. off n. Scotland, Faeroe Is., n. Scotland and n. Norway (Lofoten Is.).
(2) Is. off Baja, w. Mexico (San Benito and Coronados Is., Alijos Rocks).
(3) Is. off Guadalupe Is., w. Baja, Mexico, nests during summer.
(4) Guadalupe Is. off Baja, w. Mexico, nests during winter.
Disperses s. off w. coast of Mexico (w. Baja and w. Jalisco), Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Galapagos Is., Ecuador, but generally to 15°S in e. Pacific and the Hawaiian, Marianas, Marshall, Kiribati (Phoenix, Line), Melanesia and Marquesas Is. in the c. Pacific, Japan and Bonin Is. in the e. Pacific, and the West Indies, Trinidad, Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam, Brazil (Bahia), North Sea, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal in the Atlantic and off West Africa from Morocco, Mauritana, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Angola, Namibia to South Africa. Nonbreeding birds may remain in tropical waters over n. summer. In fact, possibly becoming established in s. hemisphere, Rabbit Is., New Zealand and may have nested at Chatham Is. in sw. Pacific.
