W. and c. Alaska, Canada from c. Yukon, wc. and s. Mackenzie, n. Saskatchewan, nc. Manitoba, n. Ontario, sc. Quebec, s. Labrador and c. Newfoundland s. in n. California to n. Baja, Mexico, and in the interior through Idaho, w. Montana to s. Nevada, ne. Arizona, nw. New Mexico and perhaps w. Texas e. in the boreal regions of the Adirondacks, New England and perhaps s. in the Appalachian Mountains to e. Tennessee and w. North Carolina.
Winters locally s. in w. and s. Mexico from Jalisco and s. Veracruz s. to Panama, and in mountainous regions of Colombia, nw. Venezuela, e. Ecuador to se. Peru and nw. Bolivia and more locally in Guyana, Surinam, and Guiana, and s. Amazonia from the lower Amazon s. to c. Bolivia and the Rio Tapajos basin with an isolated population in se. Brazil.
