Range
Australia, New Zealand and the Tasman Sea;
Breeds in New Zealand on the seaward side of the Kaikoura Mountains in ne. South Island (only two known sites: headwaters of the Kowhai River and Shearwater Streams) and Chatham Is.(?). It feeds on the open ocean off the e. coast of South Island and through the Cook Strait to Wellington West. Gathers in the e. approaches to the Cook Strait and off the Kaikoura and Canterbury coasts.
Disperses down the e. coast of South Island regularly to the Banks Peninsula and occasionally to the Otago Peninsula, Foveaux Strait and through the Cook Strait to Wellington West then through the Tasman Sea to s. Australia (Western Australia, South Australia, Kangaroo Is., Victoria, New South Wales and se. Queensland (Lady Musgrave Island)) and Tasmania. It may circumnavigate the Australian continent in a counter-clock-wise direction.
