Range

Arctic Ocean and Atlantic Ocean;
Breeds off n. Atlantic coasts of the United States (Massachusetts, Cape Cod, Penikese) and Canada (Newfoundland) from late March to mid-September, s. Iceland (Vestmann Is.), w. Europe (arrives late February to early April and leaves from July to September) in the Faeroes, Shetland and Orkney Is.(?) and is. off w. Scotland and w. England, Wales, Ireland, France (Brittany, Banneg and Molene Archipelago), Azores (Flores, Corvo), and Madiera. Formerly bred in Bermuda.
Disperses into the North Sea to Norway and w. Denmark, off the coasts of the Netherlands, Belgium, n. and w. France, n. Spain, Portugal and Morocco, into the w. Mediterranean Sea (Balearic Is.?), Desertas and Canary Is.(?) Migrates across the equator in the mid-Atlantic Ocean to South American waters (October to December) from 10°S to 50°S off Brazil (Bahia), Uruguay and n. Argentina returning n. in the e. Atlantic off Namibia and South Africa (January and February).

Summer: has bred off e. NFD and MAS (Cape Cod) and occurs regularly off NFD, NSC, NBR, MAE, NHP, MAS, RID, NYK (Long Island), NJY, DEL, MYD, VIR to NCA (Cape Hatteras).
