Range

Tropical w. and c. Pacific Ocean;
Breeds in the Hawaiian Is. (islets off Oahu, Moku Manu off Ulapau Head, Kaula Rock off Niihau, and Molokai), Leeward Is. (Kure, Midway, Pearl and Hermes Reefs, Lisianski, Laysan, French Frigate Shoals, Nihoa), Johnston, n. Marshall (Taongi), Kiribati, Line (Christmas or Kiritimati), Phoenix, Marquesas, Tuamotu, Austral (Tubuai and Rapa), Gambier, Pitcairn (Oeno, Henderson, Ducie) and Easter Is. (Sala-y-Gomez, Motu Nui). Formerly bred on Bonin, Marcus and Wake Is.
Dispersal pattern is poorly known, but seems to remain near tropical breeding is. throughout year and is absent from subtropical breeding colonies during nonbreeding season. Disperses into the e. Pacific Ocean n. of equator between 0° and 20°N, and 160°W to 90°W to the w. coast of Mexico and Central America and birds from Easter Is. may reach the coast of Peru. Recorded from Micronesia (n. Marianas, Kosiae, Marshall, Gilbert Is.), Cook and Society Is.
