Range
Circumpolar; Southern Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, s. Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean;
Breeds on is. off Argentina (Staten, Wollaston, Deceit, Falkland Is.) and Chile (Chiloe Is.) to s. Peru, se. Australia (New South Wales), se. Tasmania, s. New Zealand (South Island and is. in the Foveaux Strait), Stewart, Snares, Auckland, Campbell, Chatham, Antipodes, Macquarie Is.
Ranges to s. and e. Australia (s. Queensland, New South Wales (Wollongong), Victoria, South Australia and s. Western Australia), Tasmania and n. New Zealand n. to Three Kings Is, Banks Peninsula and Otago Peninsula and s. to iceberg belt (67°S). Some birds remain in n. hemisphere during s. summer.
In s. winter, it concentrates in n. Pacific Ocean from Sea of Okhotsk e. to Gulf of Alaska and disperses throughout Atlantic, Pacific and s. Indian Oceans to Alaska (Aleutians), Japan, Marshall, Hawaiian, Cook, Society, Fiji, Tonga, Marquesas Is., Kiribati, Brazil (Bahia), Uruguay, Ecuador (Galapagos), Colombia, Panama, Mexico (Baja), e. and w. United States and Canada (n. to Newfoundland), ex. s. Greenland, s. Iceland, w. Europe including Norway, the British Isles (Ireland, Scotland, England), France, Spain, Portugal, w. and s. Africa from Morocco, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Angola, Namibia to South Africa, Amsterdam and St. Paul Is. and s. to Antarctica.
