Ex. restricted range;
Hawaiian Is. (only known colony is in Haleakala Crater on Maui). However, it has been reported from Hawaii on several recent occasions: Kilauea Crater and Mauna Kai in Kanakaleonui. Possibly occurs on Kauai, Lanai and Molokai. Formerly nested on all main is.
Ranges to the Leeward Hawaiian and s. to Polynesia mainly between the Line Is. (Kiribati) and Marquesas Is.
